My Route Map of Thailand

I spent an amazing month travelling around Thailand in summer 2014 with four friends, and I thought it'd be helpful to anyone planning a trip to Thailand to see the route we took.
In recent years, Thailand has become quite a tried and tested travel destination, and while you can pretty much wing it when you arrive, we found it useful (with there being a large group of us, and there being a couple of first time travelers) to plan our trip in advance. (fyi, seat61 is a great travel info resource.)

...And here you have it: a rough (very rough - apologies for my lack of computer skills!) route map of our trip:

  • Flew from the UK (Edinburgh) via Qatar, to Bangkok.
  • Day trip to Kanchanburi and Erawan waterfalls.
  • Train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya for a day of temple-running, and from there, a night train to Chiang Mai.
  • Flew from Chiang Mai (via Bangkok) to Surat Thani and then ferry to Koh Samui.
  • Ferry to Koh Tao.
  • Ferry to Koh Pha Ngan.
  • Ferry to Surat Thani and then flew to Bangkok.
  • Then home. (Or, actually, three girls flew home and two of us flew on to Vietnam...but that's a whole other post/story!)

Unfortunately, we didn't make it to some highly recommended destinations such as Pai or Chiang Rai (in the north), or to any west coast islands like Koh Phi Phi. However, they are on a future to-do list for when I one day revisit the land of smiles.
